When you take your first bite of a gingerbread man cookie, what part of the cookie do you enjoy first? The children enjoyed munching on gingerbread cookies and then we recorded their results on a class pictograph. The head was the most popular part in our classroom with equal votes for the arm and leg!

The children had lots of fun practicing their math skills as they played several different holiday games during math time this week. The activities included playing with a Dreidel, Santa Addition Bump, and Roll A Gingerbread Man. As always, a BIG THANK YOU to our high school helpers for all their wonderful assistance with these activities.
The Hour of Code is a nationwide initiative to introduce computer programming to students and encourage them to learn programming. The students participated in the Hour of Code and put their problem solving skills to the test. They felt very proud when they entered the correct code so the program could run successfully! The students enjoyed making items for the Winter Solstice Parade that will take place on December 19th. At that time, we will march around the school and announce that the official start of winter will soon be arriving on the the 21st! The children also worked on making a special family gift. A BIG thank you to our wonderful high school seniors, Lizzie, Makayla and Kim for assisting with all these projects! We had special readers read to our class during the week of Thanksgiving. The South High football players came to South E. to read to us along with the South High cheerleaders. One of our high school helpers, Miss Makayla, also read a Thanksgiving story to our class. Thank you to everyone for celebrating the joy of reading with our first grade class!
The children enjoyed listening to Candace Christionsen's book, The Mitten Tree. Below is our very own mitten tree with donations of mittens.
The children enjoyed voting for their favorite school lunch. Then we turned their votes into a graph and discussed the results. Can you guess what lunch received the most votes? I'll give you a hint..........they serve it on Fridays!
We have been busy learning about character traits during our Reading Workshop time. After reading the story Pearl's First Prize Plant, each student was excited to select a character for a first prize ribbon from a story that they've recently read. Then they wrote an explanation of why they thought that character deserved a ribbon. Many different characters were selected for various reasons.
The children enjoyed listening to the story Mouskin's Golden House written by Edna Miller. It's about a little mouse that makes a discarded jack-o'-lantern his home. We placed our class pumpkin outside near a path by the school in the hopes that a creature may find it useful just as the main character did in the story. We visited it the other day and as we quietly crept up to it to take a peek, some of us thought we saw a little shadow move inside the pumpkin and there were seeds scattered on the ground......hmmmm?? :)
