Dear First Grade Families,
Below you'll find some general classroom information that I hope you find helpful.
A Few Reminders:
*Please have your child return their take home folder to school each day. A folder will be provided for your child.
*Please pack a small snack for your child each day. We have snack every morning but no snack on half days.
*Please write your child’s name on all of the items that he/she brings to school. This includes backpacks
and lunchboxes as well as sweaters, sweatshirts and jackets.
Birthdays: Due to the snack policy issued by the Plymouth Public Schools, we are not allowed to celebrate birthdays with food items. We will recognize your child on their special day with a song, special certificate, pencil, and a bookmark. All summer birthdays will be recognized in June before summer break. The children will also be recognized by the front office by having their name called over the loud speaker.
Contact Information:
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to write a note and place it in your child's take-home folder or send me an e-mail to [email protected] Click on the Plymouth icon at the top of this page to connect to the Plymouth Public School Website.
Wish List for the Classroom: paper towels, tissues, disinfectant wipes, and dry erase markers. We use these items throughout the school year. All donations are greatly appreciated!........THANK YOU!!
HOMEWORK:
Look for math homework to eventually come home a couple of times during the week. Please take time to read the "Family Note" on the top of the page so you have a better understanding of what we are working on in math. A Book Bag will eventually go home each nigh M-Th. It will usually be a book that your child has already read in school. They bring this book home to practice rereading and using their best "story telling voice". Students should be reading 10-15 minutes each night. At this point in the year, many children are being read to. If you need additional book recommendations for your child, please let me know. Spelling homework will begin later in the school year.

Ways to Help Your Children Develop a Love of Reading and Writing
• Vary the types of reading students do: *** Read Aloud – books they cannot read independently, and don’t forget to include nonfiction. • Read several books around one topic. • Read several books by one author. • Read several books in one genre (memoir, editorials, plays, fantasy, historical fiction, realistic fiction, feature articles, fairy tales). • Partner read the text. • Read aloud even if the child can read the text. • Read the same book and talk about it. • Limit video game and television time. • Make the reading environment pleasurable (cozy spot, special snack). • Encourage reading by allowing kids to read in their beds. • Encourage your child to read different types of text - books, newspaper articles, magazines, appropriate blogs and websites. • Read the same information as your children and talk about it. • Find time to write authentically (letters, emails, stories, lists). • Find ways to get their work “published” (book reviews online, contests, magazines, or letters to the newspaper). • Encourage your child to finish a piece of writing and give it as a gift. • Go to book signings and talk with authors. • Visit a favorite author’s webpage and read it together. (Robert Munsch & Patricia Polacco are both well known authors who struggled in school....so interesting to read about!) • Share your writing with your kids and expect them to write regularly. • Connect books from school and home – let the books travel. • Get books to support their hobbies and interests.
