We had special visitors read to our class during the week of Thanksgiving. The South High School football players came to South E. to read to us along with members of the South High School Dance Team. The children really enjoyed listening to the stories about Thanksgiving and wishing them the best of luck on the big upcoming game against North High on Thanksgiving Day.....GO SOUTH! Thank you for celebrating the joy of reading with our first grade class!
The children created beautiful Thanksgiving cards for the elderly. The cards will be delivered to residents through the Meals on Wheels program.
The children enjoyed listening to the story Mouskin's Golden House written by Edna Miller. It's about a little mouse that makes a discarded jack-o'-lantern his home. We placed our class pumpkin outside near a path by the school in the hopes that a creature may find it useful just as the main character did in the story. We visited it the other day and as we quietly crept up to it to take a peek, some of us thought we saw a little shadow move inside the pumpkin and there were seeds scattered on the ground......hmmmm?? :) Below are pictures of the children sharing their written work. They shared interesting stories about missing teeth, Halloween night, and experiencing a bad fall just to name a few! We worked on bringing our stories to life by adding elements to our stories such as; speech bubbles and/or quotation marks, sound words, pop out words and action words. We have been busy learning about character traits during our Reading Workshop time. After reading the story Pearl's First Prize Plant, each student was excited to select a character for a first prize ribbon from a story that they've recently read. Then they wrote an explanation of why they thought that character deserved a ribbon. Many different characters were selected for various reasons.
To show our support for our troops, in honor of Veteran’s Day/Thanksgiving, the children wrote friendly letters letting them know how much we appreciate everything they do for our country. They also wished them a Happy Thanksgiving.
The New England Aquarium came to visit us at South Elementary School. They set up several tide pools for the children to explore. The tide pools contained many different sea animals such as, sea stars, crabs and snails. Representatives from the aquarium shared many interesting facts about these ocean creatures. A BIG thank you to our PTA for funding this wonderful experience! |
